May 7, 2018 - Day 29 - Genesis 29

I am writing from my desk in Seattle, WA.

Genesis 29:

Jacob continues on his journey.  Remember that because he deceived his dad and crapped on Esau, he's on the run.  He finds some shepherds from Harran and asks if they know Nahor's grandson (Laban) and if he's doing well.

There's some sheep and they get watered, doesn't sound important.

Jacob meets Laban's daughter Rachel and kisses her.  This dude moves fast.  After he kissed her he weeped aloud.  Don't try this at home.

Jacob told Rachel that they were related and she got super excited and told her pops (Laban).

Laban is thrilled and we are reminded that Jacob is Laban's nephew, which means Jacob and Rachel are first cousins.

Jacobs hangs out for a month and Laban tries to pay Jacob for his work.  We are not told what kind of work Jacob is doing for Laban.  Laban had two daughters, Leah and Rachel.  We are told that Rachel had a lovely figure and was beautiful; but Leah had weak (or delicate) eyes lol.  What does that mean?

Since Jacob is in love with Rachel, he tells Laban that he will work for seven years in exchange for Rachel.

So Laban says its better to give her to Jacob than someone else, so Jacob worked for seven years to get her.  Though we are told it only seemed like a few days because of his love for her.  This seems poetic.

After he completed his seven year shift, he asked for his wife so he can get laid.  And you thought you bent over backwards to get in bed with someone!

For whatever reason, Laban has a big feast and gives Leah (not Rachel) to Jacob.  Apparently Jacob was so hammered he couldn't tell who was who, so he hooks up with Leah.  The next morning, Jacob wakes up and sees Leah there, and is annoyed and asking Laban why he has deceived him.

Laban pulls a fast one on him and says that its not custom to give the younger daughter before the older.  Laban tells him that he can have Rachel too if he works for another seven years, so he does.  He's married to both of them but he likes Rachel more, and finally got to hook up with her.

The Lord saw that Leah was not loved so she is enabled to conceive, gets preggo and has a boy named Reuben.  She says that because the Lord has seen her misery, Jacob will love her now.  Reuben sounds like the Hebrew for 'he has seen my misery.'  Dark.

Rachel is childless and Leah gets pregnant again; and has another boy named Simeon.  Leah says that the Lord heard that she is not loved.  Simeon likely means 'one who hears' in Hebrew.

She has another son and names him Levi.  She has hope that now her husband will become attached to her.  Levi is likely derived from the Hebrew word for 'attached.'

Leah has ANOTHER son and names this one Judah.  She says this time she will praise the Lord.  Judah is likely derived from the Hebrew word for 'praise.'

The chapter ends and we are told that she finally stopped having children.

Does this story mean anything to anyone?
