January 26, 2019 - Day 293 - 1 Kings 2
I am writing from my desk in Seattle, WA.
1 Kings 2:
David is on his way out so he tells Solomon to be strong, act like a man, and keep following God.
He also reminded him not to let Joab go to the grave in peace. But because the sons of Barzillai were nice to him, then Solomon should be kind to them. I see a lot of inconsistencies in how David treats people, but what do I know? I'm just reading it in the Bible.
And there's a Benjaminite named Shimei, who cursed David before, but then David promised him that he wouldn't kill him. But now that David is dying, he tells Solomon to kill this Shimei character. That is kinda shitty, dude.
Then David died, having ruled over Israel for forty years. Conveniently, a lot of things happen in blocks of forty years. The writers must've really liked this timeframe for one reason or another.
Adonijah goes to Bathsheba and asks her to ask Solomon if he (Adonijah) can have Abishag as his wife. Adonijah is coming off a bit thirsty.
Solomon was super offended by this request so he had Adonijah put to the death (by a dude named Benaiah) that same day. Damn bro that escalated quickly.
Then Solomon told Abiathar that he deserved to die. What did he even do? But he didn't kill Abiathar, he only demoted him.
Joab caught wind of all this madness and tried to flee. Well Solomon had Benaiah kill Joab too.
Solomon had Shimei build a house in Jerusalem and told him to stay there, otherwise he would kill him. Well he stayed there for a few years, then a couple of his slaves ran away. Shimei went looking for his slaves, and since he left Jerusalem to do it, Solomon had Benaiah kill him.
Solomon is ruthless yo.
