December 14, 2018 - Day 250 - 1 Samuel 14

I am writing from my bed in Seattle, WA.

1 Samuel 14:

And now we’ve come to the story about the armor bearer.

Jonathan, the son of Saul, decides to step into a situation where he needs God to show up.  He says to his armor bearer, “Come, let’s go... Perhaps the lord will act in our behalf.”

He’s planning to attack the Philistines.  This is a battle he cannot win without help.

In the first attack, Jonathan and his armor bearer kill about twenty men.

The Israelites are taking out the Philistines and evidently confuse them so much that the Philistines are killing each other.

Then Saul says no one can eat before the evening, for what appears to be no good reason.

There was some honey in the forest and no one ate it, since they heard about the prohibition; but Jonathan went to eat some and the people warned him.  He didn’t care, saying that his pops has brought trouble upon the land.

Then Saul and some other dude are bickering about not eating food with blood in it.

Jonathan tells Saul that he ate the honey and that now he (Jonathan) needs to die.  Punishment fits the crime for sure.

Well they decide not to execute him.   Saul stopped going after the Philistines and I guess they gave up.

The chapter closes with a recap of Saul’s family and a reminder that he was always battling the Philistines.0
