November 16, 2018 - Day 222 - Judges 11

I am writing from my desk in Seattle, WA

Judges 11:

This chapter opens with Jephthah being heralded as a warrior.  His dad was Gilead and his mom was a prostitute.  I imagine lots of people had prostitute moms in these times.  His brother's from another mother pushed him out when they got older since he had the prosty mom.

Well the elders of Gilead come back after him once they are in trouble fighting the Ammonites.  Now you need him, convenient.  They say he can lead them if he comes and helps them out.

The Israelites tried to cross through some land, the Amorites weren't having it, but God helped the Israelites kick some ass.

Then God helped Jephthah slaughter the Ammonites.

When Jephthah got home, his daughter was excited to see him.  Then she went into the hills with her girlfriends for two months, grieving over the fact she would never marry.  Though it doesn't say why she will never marry.

This chapter ends with a reminder of the new bizarre tradition, for four days every year, the girls went out in the hills and mourned this daughter who cannot marry for an unknown reason.
