September 30, 2018 - Day 175 - Deuteronomy 22

I am writing from my desk in Seattle, WA.

Deuteronomy 22:

Welp, this chapter is not a good one.  It is a classic example that someone points to when expressing that the Bible is barbaric and immoral.  Lets dive in.

It starts out okay with a reminder to return a lost item if you find it; whether this be an animal or a piece of clothing.

Then we have some bizarre rules.

A woman must not wear men's clothing, and vice versa.  We are told that God detests this.  Does anyone actually believe the creator of the universe is genuinely disgusted when a woman wears a man's sweatshirt?  The short answer is no.

If you find a bird's nest, you can take the young but not the mother.

So we have a part about returning lost items, then not wearing certain clothes, then a bird's nest.

LOL.

If you build a house, make sure you put a wall around the roof so no one falls in and you feel guilty.

What?

Don't plan two kinds of seeds in your vineyard?  Anybody do that?  Didn't think so.

Don't plow with an ox and donkey together.

Oh and don't wear clothes of wool and lien woven together.  Anybody do that one?  No?  Got it.

This is where it gets ugly.

If a dude marries a woman and thinks she's not a virgin and slanders her, basically calling her a ho, then her virginity has to be proven by her parents.  If they can prove it, then the guy gets fined and he cannot ever divorce her.

NOW, if they cannot prove she's a virgin (how do you even do that?), then you bring her to her dad's house while all of the men in the town throw rocks at her until she's dead.

#MERCY

If a man is sleeping with another man's wife, well you gotta kill both of them.

If a man meets an engaged woman in a town and sleeps with her, they both have to die too.  The woman because she was in a town and didn't scream for help, the man because he violated another man's wife (property).  Yes.  A woman must be executed because she didn't scream for help lol.  Talk about victim blaming.

But if the engaged woman is raped out in the country, only the man has to die since no one is there to rescue the woman.

Here's a weird one.  If a man rapes a single woman, he has to give her dad some money, marry her and never divorce her.  Does she get a say? lol

We close with a reminder that a guy cannot marry his father's wife.

Ok so this is all pretty messed up.  CLEARLY, if we read the Bible literally as directions on what to do with life, we run into a dead end when we get to this chapter.

The Bible is a collection of stories about life.

Life is dynamic.

Some of it is going to be horrible.

Some of it is going to be insightful.

And sometimes its going to be amazing.

This is a great example of when very broken people made very terrible laws.  Women were treated unfairly.  People were barbaric.  Yet in the midst of this shitstorm, light will sometimes shine through.
