May 9, 2018 - Day 31 - Genesis 31
I am writing from my desk in Seattle, WA.
Genesis 31:
Laban's sons are talking crap on Jacob, he hears about it and Laban ain't cool anymore. I didn't think he ever was? The Lord tells Jacob to go back to his homeland, and Jacob tells his wives that their dad has been dumping on him with unfair wages.
Jacob talk about a dream he had about goats and speckles and how God is hooking him up with all the best stuff, and how God has told him to go back to his native land.
The ladies ask about inheritance and tell Jacob to do whatever God is telling him. So Jacob and the wives and all the livestock and whatever else they had head back to Isaac in Canaan.
Jacob decides to leave without telling Laban, and Rachel decides to steal her father's "household gods." It seems to be thought that these were some type of idols, that is, something he probably liked a little too much. We are not told what these "gods" are though.
It takes three days for Laban to find out that Jacob and his crew have fled, so Laban grabs some fam and goes after him. Then we are told that God tells Laban in a dream to not say anything to Jacob, whether its good or bad.
Laban ignores this warning and decides call Jacob out, upset that he didn't get to say bye to his daughters and grandkids. Understandable. He also asks why his gods were stolen.
Jacob tells Laban he was afraid that he would take his daughters away from him, and says that he's more that welcome to inspect his stuff and take back whatever might be his. At this point, Jacob doesn't know that Rachel swiped the gods.
Laban peeps into Jacob's tent, Leah's tent, and the servants' tent; finding nothing. Rachel put the gods in her camel's saddle and was sitting on them, so Laban didn't find anything. Much to her credit, she said she wasn't able to stand up because she was having her period.
Jacob is angry at this point, wondering what the point of this inspection is. Jacob reminds Laban that he's worked hard for him, and that because God has seen Jacob get dumped on by Laban, that God has rebuked Laban last night. Okay?
Laban said that everything there is his, but asks Jacob to make a covenant. They put some stones together because this was thousands of years ago. An animal sacrifice goes down too, cause why not?
Laban kisses his daughters and grandkids goodbye, and then heads home.
