May 5, 2018 - Day 27 - Genesis 27

I am writing from my desk in Seattle, WA.

Genesis 27:

Isaac is old now.  He wants Esau to go hunting for him and make his last meal, then Isaac will give him his blessing before he dies.  Rebekah overhears this and tells Jacob to get some goats for the same reason.  This should be interesting.

Jacob seems hesitant and concerned that Isaac will find out that he's giving him the food instead of Esau.  Even though Isaac is blind, Esau is hairy and Jacob has smooth skin; so Isaac would know if it was Jacob if he touches him.  Furthermore, this could bring a curse instead of a blessing.

Rebekah insists and says that she will shoulder the curse.  So Jacob dresses up in Esau's clothes, covers up his smooth skin, and brings some tasty food to Isaac.  Isaac asks who is bringing him food, so Jacob lies and says he's Esau.  Isaac insists he comes closer so he can touch him, and becomes skeptical because he's anticipating those hairy Esau hands.  He asks again if it is Esau, and Jacob lies once more.  Isaac eats the food, drinks some wine, and asks for a big ol kiss.  Isaac kisses him and smells his clothes, which helps confirms it is Esau (since Jacob is wearing his clothes).

Isaac drops the blessing and Jacob bounces.  Esau comes in with some food and Isaac is obviously confused.  Esau identifies himself and we are told that Isaac trembled violently.  Isaac says he already dropped the blessing and Esau wants some of that too.  Isaac says that Jacob came deceitfully and snubbed the blessing.

Esau is pissed off and says this is the second that Jacob has robbed him.  First the birthright, then the blessing.  Apparently there's no take backs once you lay down a blessing.  Esau asked if he had anymore blessings in the bank, and Isaac told him that he will be away from the earth's richness, away from heaven stuff, live by the sword, and serve his brother.  Yikes.  Isaac then says, "but when you grow restless, you will throw his yoke from off your neck."  Hmm.

So Esau holds a grudge against Jacob because of this blessing, and says to himself that when Isaac dies, he's going to kill Jacob.  Legit.

Rebekah tries to get ahead of the game and tells Jacob that Esau is planning to wipe him out, and urges him to jet.  She thinks that once Esau calms down, Jacob can come back.

To wrap this chapter up, we have Rebekah telling Isaac she doesn't want to live anymore because of Hittite women; and if Jacob marries a Hittite woman, she won't want to live anymore.  We are given no reason why lol.  Is this a plot hole?
