May 19, 2018 - Day 41 - Genesis 41
I am writing from my desk in Seattle, WA.
Genesis 41:
Two years pass and Pharaoh has a dream; and its a weird one. Seven fat cows come out of the Nile, then seven ugly cows come out of the Nile. The ugly cows ate the fat cows, then Pharaoh wakes up. Cool.
He has another dream about seven heads of healthy grain being swallowed by seven heads of thin and weak grain.
Obviously disturbed when he wakes up, he sends for the magicians and wise men of Egypt. Yes, magicians. He told them about his dreams but no one could interpret them.
The cupbearer tells Pharaoh how Joseph was able to interpret his dream when he was in prison, so Pharaoh sends for Joseph from the dungeon. He asks Joseph to interpret his dream and Joseph says he can't do it, but that God will give Pharaoh the answer.
Pharaoh retells Joseph the two dreams mentioned above. Joseph says the dreams are the same and that God has revealed to Pharaoh what is going to be done. The seven good cows and the seven heads of healthy grain represent seven years. The fat cows eating the good cows and the unhealthy grain swallowing the good grain represent famine. There will be seven years of great abundance followed by seven years of famine. Everyone will forget about the abundance because the famine is going to be that bad. Bummer.
We are told that the dream was given to Pharaoh in two forms because God has already 'firmly decided' and God will do it soon. So Pharaoh has time to plan for the famine during the abundance, so I guess that is good. Pharaoh was pretty excited that Joseph knew all this stuff so he put him in charge of his palace. He also puts Joseph in charge of Egypt; and gives him a ring and a sweet wardrobe, and a wife!
Joseph collects and stores a bunch of food during the abundance. During this time, Joseph had two sons. The famine started and everybody went to buy stuff from Joseph because he knew about the famine and they didn't. Insider trading? I bet he raised his prices too. This was a smart economical decision.
What does this story mean? Life won't always be easy. Make sure you save money when you have money, because you never know when you might lose that job. Unless you're Joseph, then you'll get a seven year warning.
