May 12, 2018 - Day 34 - Genesis 34

I am writing from my hotel room in Koloa, HI; on the island of Kauai.

Genesis 34:

This story takes an interesting turn.

So Dinah (Jacob's daughter with Leah) goes out to visit the ladies of the land.  Shechem, some asshole, sees her and rapes her.  We are told that his heart was drawn to her, he loved her, and spoke tenderly to her.  Well then why did you rape her, you bag of shit?  He tells his dad that he wants her to be his wife.  Ya know, biblical marriage.

Jacob and his sons hear about this and are obviously not happy; but not for why you think.  They were upset because she had been defiled.  Now that she is no longer a virgin, her property value has been drastically reduced.  Women need to stay virgins so you can get them for max value.  Ya know, biblical marriage.

My intent here is not to insult the Bible; but it makes me sick when people beat the drum of 'biblical marriage' as a defense for their positions of oppression.  Read the Bible, man.

Digressing:  Shechem is adamant that she becomes his wife, though Jacob's sons have a serious issue with Shechem's foreskin.  Chop it and you can have Dinah, otherwise she goes back with her brothers.

Interestingly, the fact that she is raped isn't an issue it all.  The issue here is that Shechem is uncircumcised.  I'm really glad that we actually give a damn about women in 2018.

They talk about how each other's daughters can marry the other's daughters, of course with no consent from the women.  Ya know, biblical marriage.

Because they love this idea of getting all these ladies, they have a Farewell Foreskin Party.  Sounds like a blast.

PLOT TWIST:  Three days after the Farewell Foreskin Party, two of Jacob's sons killed every man in the city.  That's some Kill Bill level murdering right there.  Impressive.  They killed Shechem and his dad too.  Cause why not?  They also looted all the bodies.  They're dead, so might as well see if they've got a fifty in their pocket.  They also took everything from the houses, all the livestock, and all the women and children.

I guess they didn't take too kindly to the fact that they devalued their sister.

violence + violence = more violence

Didn't work then and doesn't work now.

Will humans ever learn?  I certainly hope so.

I'm not sure what the deeper meaning is here, but I'm open to suggestions!
